South Tongu District
Residents of Vume in the South Tongu District now have access to clean, reliable water following the commissioning of ten mechanized boreholes by the Impala Foundation.
The project addresses a longstanding challenge for the community, which has relied on the river for generations as one of its few sources of water for drinking, cooking, and daily household use.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Founder of the Impala Foundation described the moment as “humbling,” noting that the initiative was designed to change the community’s relationship with water access.
According to the founder, the intervention goes beyond the provision of water infrastructure. It touches on health, dignity, and easing the daily burden carried by families, particularly mothers and children who are often tasked with fetching water.

The Foundation reiterated its core belief that access to basic necessities such as clean water should not be determined by where a person is born, and pledged that the Vume project marks only the beginning of its work in underserved communities.
The event was attended by Hon. Maxwell Kwame Lukutoe, Member of Parliament for South Tongu Constituency; a representative of the District Chief Executive; and Torgbe Okonkoko Nana Yao Akornor II, Paramount Chief of the Vume Traditional Area, alongside members of the community.
In remarks directed at the people of Vume, the Foundation’s founder expressed gratitude for the community’s openness and trust, and reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to identifying genuine needs and delivering lasting solutions in the communities and among the individuals who need them most.
The ten boreholes are expected to significantly reduce the community’s dependence on the river, improving both water quality and the ease of access for households across Vume.
